Big Island Beaches

Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park
Along the western coastline of the Island of Hawai'i lies the hot, rugged lava of Kaloko-Honokohau. Some people find it difficult to understand why the ancient Hawaiians chose to settle upon these stark lava fields. The reason was, perhaps, a spiritual one, for there was a spirit in Kaloko-Honokohau.

Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park
Step back in time to a sanctuary of Hawaii’s past where traditional Hawaiian lifestyle is preserved. Ancient temples and ki’i (wooden images) whisper stories from the past.

Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site
Built between 1790-91 by Kamehameha I, Pu'ukohola Heiau displays the skill of chiefs, men, women, and children under the astute leadership of Kamehameha I.

Parker Ranch
Spanning approximately 150,000 acres between Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains on Hawaii’s Big Island, Parker Ranch is among our nation’s largest and most historic ranches. Throughout 2007, Parker Ranch marks its 160th Anniversary, commemorating the $10 purchase of two acres of land from King Kamehameha on January 14, 1847.

Star Gaze Hawaii
View selected deep space objects such as planets, galaxies, nebulae, interesting stars and star clusters, and multiple star systems with our Celestron 11 Telescopes.

Waipio Valley, Hawaii
Located along the Hamakua Coast on the northeastern coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i, Waipi'o Valley is the largest and southernmost of the seven valleys on the windward side of the Kohala Mountains. Waipi'o is a mile wide at the coast and almost six miles deep.

Nani Mau Gardens
“Nani Mau” means “forever beautiful” in Hawaiian. Within the lush 53 acres you will find 20 acres of various native and exotic flowers, orchid gardens, palms and tropical fruit orchards.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
A true geological hot spot, this national park contains two of the world’s most active volcanoes. Measured from the seafloor, broad Mauna Loa is the tallest mountain on Earth, and Kilauea continues to spew and spit, constantly reforming the landscape around it.

Kilauea Summit: Crater Rim Drive
Begin at the Kilauea Visitor Center, where you can get the latest information on park roads and safety precautions. Don't miss the short, stunning film of recent volcanic eruptions.

Captain Cook, Kealakekua Bay
Thinking Cook was a returning God, the Hawaiians welcomed and honored him. Strife followed, and the Hawaiians realized that Cook and his crew were not immortal. In the end, Cook was surrounded and killed at this very spot. This monument is only approachable by rugged foot trail or by water. The best way to reach this austere and beautiful spot is by kayak.

Laupahoehoe Train Museum
We are a small, community-run museum located on the beautiful Hamakua Heritage Coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i. Our purpose is to honor the colorful history of the Hilo Railroad, which began in 1899 and lasted to 1946, when railroad tracks and facilities were irreparably damaged by a devastating tidal wave.

Lava Tree State Park
The Lava Trees in Lava Tree State Park were created in a 1790 lava flow. Lava Tree State Park consists of 17.1 acres of native plants, trees and many lava tree molds - most of which are still standing. A small paved trail takes the visitor around the park and is easy walking for adults and children.
