Baker
Island Light
Because of dangerous ledges and a sandbar nearby, and to help mark
the western approach to Frenchman Bay, President John Quincy Adams authorized
the building of a lighthouse on Baker Island in 1828.

President Martin Van Buren authorized the building of a lighthouse

The 1855 annual report of the Lighthouse Board stated, "There
is a very good harbor about four miles west of Mount Desert Harbor, called
Bass Harbor. A light is necessary to assist vessels entering it".

This bridge, the only completely shingled covered bridge in the State,
